Festivities

Throughout the year, we celebrate seasonal and cultural events in various ways. Riverside Community has established its own .........

Ahi Kaa

The first ever Ahi Kaa celebration was held on June 3rd 2004 at Riverside Community to coincide with the full moon and the Aotearoa New Year. Ahi Kaa is a time to come together in honour of those who “keep the home fires burning”. For Riverside, this means remembering our elders and their choice for peace, acknowledging our friends, whanau and wider community and affirming our relationship with Papatuanuku and the land we look after. The celebration is held around a fire with karakia, songs, speakers and dance, with a letting go of the old year and a welcoming in of the new.

Harvest Festival 2005

This year's harvest Festival was held on the 1st of May in the community Hall. It was noted that this was the first community meal in the hall since the complex was damaged by fire 18 months ago. Dinner was followed by a harvest story and penata for the children, after which the children  lead the adults on a latern walk with their pumpkin laterns up to the awaiting bonfire....
